The main thing I am critical of are the chat reports, but that was essentially Microsoft’s doing.

Back when the likes of 1.9 and 1.11 came out, they added things people they wanted (elytra, firework boosting) but ended up screwing over how the whole game worked. So I can see why they’re being careful with harmless small changes. It’s also a 16 year old game, the fact that they’re pushing free updates for a one off £20 purchase is excellent. The game is also already pretty good as it is. The mob vote was a nice idea for community engagement(although they could have been more clearer on how the losers would be added later on). I think people are FAR too toxic that they aren’t receiving free updates for a £20 game that is already absolutely stellar, and that many have poured thousands of hours in already, if not tens of thousands. I’ve been playing it for over a decade now, and I am quite happy with the direction it is going. People are ungrateful that they aren’t getting huge game changing updates every year. Things like that need to be well balanced and ironed out to prevent a disaster like 1.11 happening again.

      It’s by far the best value for money I’ve ever spent, I’ve been playing it since early alpha and I still put hours into it now, I’m not the greatest builder and I do spend all my time in creative, but I have just as much fun now as I did when I first started playing it, can’t say that about many games.

        I think the modern internet with its everything-is-free mentality has created a lot of weird entitlement on behalf of the consumers of all that freely available stuff.

        And, for some reason, the vitriol that’s created by the system is rarely aimed at someone who’s figured out how to sell their “free” users out to some eldritch corporate behemoth. It is almost always directed at somebody who’s trying to make a living by putting up a paywall, or at someone who’s providing something for free who isn’t doing as much as the users feel like they deserve.

          Same happened when I ran a server. Had people who weren’t donating complaining I wasn’t managing it well when at times I was treating it as a full time job and not getting paid. Any time I stepped away from that thing, somebody tried to break something on there to be “funny”

            Yeah. The whole thing of soliciting donations is backwards. I mean it’s fine, if someone wants to contribute then it’s fine, but it’s not accomplishing the goal.

            • The people who receive the donations receive a tiny fraction of what they should
            • The people who choose to contribute already have the right mentality (that they picked up from somewhere else)
            • The people who don’t contribute are the ones who should be required to contribute, as a way to adjust their mentality

      Arguably the value proposition didn’t even change much between inflation, free updates, and things like having to integrate with a Mojang and now a Microsoft account.

      Global chat bans is the chat hate. Minecraft was (and still primarily is) a single player game with private server capability. Banning people from using a feature they paid for in a setting entirely unrelated to the company is a problem.

      Its especially a problem if you own your own server, as you can be banned from doing any in-game admin work, including banning people via chat commands. again on a server you own and run that is disconnected from microsoft and mojang entirely.

      Its a paradigm shift that has never had an equal in gaming. In no other games with private servers are features restricted on private servers. No one should have the capability to do that.

      People running private servers can be all sorts of groups, however Mojang wanted everyone to behave to their rules, which didn’t fit for some servers (like 2b2t). Mojang’s rule enforcement has never been consistent, and people were afraid to get banned over minor nonsense.

      How it ended up is that people didn’t want it started using “No Chat Reports” mod alongside their mods, which blocks the way Mojang verifies message authenticity for them so no report could be considered legit.

      Servers can force this verification to work to send messages, or not require it. They can also use this mod on their servers to break the authenticity mechanism for all players on that server. Most servers will have it disabled; but the biggest ones keep it to hold their public images safe to parents.

      Essentially, they added functionality where you can report messages and get people banned globally from all Minecraft servers. The problem was that they had stuff on there like griefing and swearing and “harassment” (which is very loosely defined, a server I ran had someone complaining it was harassment that a player made a second joke about them in the context of the game. Six months after the first one.). Stuff like that should be managed by the server admins, not mojang. There are good reasons for such a system I think, such as child grooming, doxxing, or inter-server harassment.

      Also, Minecraft servers are all privately run except for realms.

      TL;DR: You can get permanently banned from the entirety of multiplayer after sending slurs on a private whitelisted server.
