I know, lemmy.ml is kind of cheating. I just thought this was a little interesting.
Also, almost all of the upvotes for my comment came from lemmy.ml. I think as time goes on, the narrative is getting punctured despite these guys’ best efforts.
They have retconned it now as “we never wanted to be the flagship instance” since most of the world has decided that they’re ridiculous but I have a hard time believing that was the plan. As with most authoritarians, their plan was to keep their iron grip on all the little feeble people under their control and expand it out to more and more people, and they’re just confused when it’s not popular for anyone who’s not already trapped inside isn’t psyched about coming over and joining up.
Edit: Out of curiosity, I went to join-Lemmy.org and told it I wanted to join a server, English speaking, anywhere in the world, focused on politics. Its first recommendation was szmer.info. Second one was Lemmy.ml.
From my quick glance the only .ml comms that don’t have more activity than their non.ml counterparts are indeed Linux, privacy but also asklemmy. That’s it lmao
Remember when reporters were giving George W a hard time because literally no one else in the world wanted to invade Iraq with us, and he looked all smug and said “You forgot Poland!” and then everyone made fun of him for that for the next year and a half?
.ml doesn’t hold the largest communities for anything. You know who has more MAU than Lemmy.ml? !dull_mens_club@lemmy.world and !futurology@futurology.today.

Edit: It’s not “don’t forget Poland” apparently
I did not remember that. For anyone else who didn’t: https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/you-forgot-poland
