A few hours after President Donald Trump announced that he would impose steep tariffs on Canada, hockey fans in the capital Ottawa booed the Star-Spangled Banner during a National Hockey League game against a visiting US team.

It’s just what they do in the NHL. Any time a US and Canadian team play each other, they play both anthems. You know, out of the mutual respect we felt for each other until about two days ago.

Idk I don’t think most Canadians have ever had much respect for Americans.

Canadian reporting in-only partially true. I have next to no respect for America the institution but I care about individual Americans just as much as my neighbors down the street.

We play your national anthem when you visit because it costs nothing to make you feel welcome while you visit us.

Trump being an asshole doesn’t mean we have to change our values. Kindness and mutual respect shouldn’t be transactional.

In their defense, not even Americans have respect for Americans: I mean, look at the shit stain we just chose to represent us.

M8, let me tell you about the UEFA champions league, FIBA BCL, et al. It’s not a national team, playing the anthem is levels of deranged that shouldn’t exist in a civilised society. Don’t let yourself be numbed into thinking that’s normal, it Isn’t. That’s a 3rd reich levels of nationalism. Holy shit.

While I agree with the gist of what you’re saying, rioting because your favourite sportsball team lost is also deranged shit that shouldn’t exist in a civilized society. It might not be nationalism to a country but it sure as shit comes from the same place, maybe just with a little more gang mentality thrown in.

I actually do agree that it’s weird. But dude, it’s not fucking Nazi level. Don’t downplay the level of shit those guys were up to.

I’m not downplaying the Nazis, their indoctrination through similar tactics was pervasive. Mistakes of the past repeat in the future and all that cautioning. That’s how you breed a generation of young people that vote for orange turds or frustrated painters.

Hockey is the antithesis of nationalism in Canada just as “professional” sports are in many countries. Happens at kids games even.

          I don’t think you understood what I wrote…

Canada, as a civilised country, should refuse to play anthems for team sports…

Oh I completely understand what you wrote and I agree with you. Nationalism in North America is rooted in pro sport. Lots of pro sport and the antics from it in North America were developed in wartime to help distract from major negative news events and help create a “national pride” in wartime. Thus nationalism and sport are intertwined quite closely here.

Hockey in Canada is just a dry run for nationalism and blind dedication to state. It teaches kids the exact same traits the military does. This is by design and few question it because it is so ingrained and even expected. My kids don’t play hockey. They get mocked and teased because of it. Not for long though. They’re learning Jiu Jitsu.

As a Canadian I agree. It’s fucking weird and I’ve thought so since I was a child. Every Monday they’d play the anthem at schools too which I always thought was fucking weird.

Aging myself here - But we used to sing the anthem every morning at school. And when I was in catholic school (montreal in the 80s only had catholic or protestant schools, no secular board existed in public schooling) that was followed by the lord’s prayer.

                  I hate both now.

Yup. And they are expected to stop what they are doing immediately. Remove any head cover aside from religious articles and stand at attention. It’s fucking insane. Public school.
