When asked why, a Trump campaign official put it bluntly. “If there’s one state that could bite you in the a–, it’s North Carolina,” the official said.

When help arrives, the cult urged its followers to fight that help as some sort of evil. Maybe don’t tell your cultists to attack the aid workers trying to help folks out from under rubble? Hard to say it’s evil when they are literally there to help.

That was part of the plan. A lot of their followers are deep into a rabbit-hole where Joe Biden stole the election, the whole federal government is pedophile monsters, Trump is a genius tough guy who’s fighting for the little man, and so on.

One of the only things that can pierce that bubble once it’s developed is contact with the real world in some undeniable fashion that contradicts the myth. If FEMA shows up and helps, the GOP will lose followers, because some of their crazy will fall away as they see the real world in action and interact with the federal government which is just doing normal un-pedophile federal government stuff.

They have to train people to go after FEMA with rifles in little pickup-truck gangs, and hide in the hills instead of take the relocation money. Like Mayer said of the Nazis: "The system itself could not have intended this in the beginning, but in order to sustain itself it was compelled to go all the way.”

And of course, it also bites them in the ass because keeping western NC wrecked makes it harder for his supporters to vote.
