Kurzgesagt has a video on fentanyl. Apparently most opioid addicts specifically try to avoid fentanyl as its high is much shorter than other opioids and the overdose potential is also much higher. Fentanyl is popular with dealers because it’s sold in smaller amounts so it’s easier to smuggle/hide. It’s also highly addictive so some dealers slip it into their other less addictive drugs. Fentanyl is popular because of dealers, not addicts.

I was given fentanyl during a medical procedure and can confirm the high fades really fast. During the procedure I was at peace, just laying there without a care or worry in the world and virtually no pain. Within about 15 minutes of the procedure’s end I was back to cold, sober agony.
