    Percentage population increases since 1961:

    Humans: 161.85%
    Farmed chickens: 1,071.43%
    Farmed pigs: 375%
    Farmed sheep and goats: 275%
    Cows: 178.61%

God dammit jesus fucking christ I was looking for an optimistic take where I showed you guys that farmed animal populations haven’t gone up as fast as the human population but I was WRONG, not only are there many more of us but on average each one of us is also having radically more animals tortured on our behalves. Shit. Everyone wants to be middle class and here we are in our western post middle class phase going “No please, it’s not what you think it is, we beg you” looking like absolute hypocrites. How do you convince the world to go vegan without looking like you’re merely asking them to forego the luxury that your own liberal society has been dumping on you your entire life?

I was wondering the same thing, thanks for the stats.

We could get into the nitty gritty and determine how many chickens an average person eats etc, and maybe we’d find that they’re actually growing at a reasonable rate in comparison to one another, but at first glance these numbers do suggest that we’re killing animals at an accelerating rate.

I’m not vegan but I’ve greatly reduced my meat intake in the past few years, I only really eat it when I’m out and about. This decision was party made because I care about the environment, but this definitely is not the case for many people, so how could they be convinced? A mass marketing campaign aimed at disgusting them?

At an accelerating rate that is out of sync with our own population growth*

The human population has nearly tripled during that time period, so that makes sense. Chickens scaled far higher because they are smaller while making up a larger portion of the overall meat consumption.

So yeah, the numbers are disturbing but mostly show that people’s eating habits have mostly changed in which meat they eat, not that they are proportionally eating more meat per person.

Doesn’t it show that all meat consumption has trippled too, except for chicken, which has grown by factor 10?

I wonder if the Y axis is the same in all 4 graphs.

Also this would be more useful to see global human population under each category.

The Y-axis is definitely not the same for all. Chickens start at 7 🅱️illion, which is visually lower than the millions for the cows…
