It’s just common decency to call people what they want to be called. If you pronounce someone’s last name wrong or don’t use their preferred nickname (not all Davids like to be called Dave, for example), they’ll correct you and then it’s part of our social contract that you’ll do your best to get it right in the future. The pronouns in email IDs was a super helpful reminder, and they’ve only been gone a minute but I’ve already gotten some pronouns wrong for colleagues I didn’t know that well, and I feel terrible about it. If those labels had stayed, I wouldn’t have made such a simple mistake.
This shit might seem trivial, but it has real impacts on real people on a daily basis.
