A lot of us migrated months ago when the writing was on the wall.

Kbin became my home when I decided to move to a smaller foreign county, and I’m glad it was, because the land of Mastodon was a bit too distant for me. When the Kbin house was burning down, fortunately the next door neighbor, Fedia, was there to take me in and make things feel familiar.

I suppose that’s the whole advantage of the Fediverse. One head of the hydra may get chopped down, but many others can spring out from it.

That’s cool and all, but if we’re directly correlating this, then I think it would be more like you drawing out the provinces in China or India.

China I could maybe get Manchuria, Inner Mongolia, Tibet kinda right, I’d try to get Guangdong, Szechuan and Xi’an, the rest I’m screwed (Heibei maybe? Guangzhou? Idfk). Perhaps I’d be better to stick to the 3 kingdoms.

India I’m much more screwed. Kashmir, North India, South India, Delhi, something called Gujurat maybe, Bengal, Pashtun?, Bombay, Goa? Throw the Ganges somewhere in there in the North and East…a desert in the west, North and South Mountains that are not called mountains? Now that I’m thinking about it, I’d probably draw it out as Kashmir, that big strip that hugs the Ganges and Himalayas where Delhi is, and Texas.

In the 90s, women had to be diligent to take a pill every day. Hell, I can’t even be trusted to take a pain pill when I have a headache.

I can’t tell you how many times an SO and I had a scare because she forgot to take a pill for a few days. I think this is doubly so when you’re in your late teens/early 20s and still don’t have a good understanding of risk.

Now, women can get an injection that lasts 3-6 months, or an implant that works for years.

So we’ve lowered our risk significantly and now it’s more skewed towards family planning. I think that’s a great thing - let the people who want to have kids have them, let the rest live out their lives how they envision it.

But family planning is tough and there are important factors that others have mentioned in their comments here. Money, opportunity, timing, support. I didn’t start having kids until my 40s, but if things had lined up better, I certainly would have preferred to be a Dad a little sooner.

No, they don’t understand. They’d rather just sit in their basements and complain on the Internet rather than get out into the light and actually try to effect the change they wish to see.

I think you are treating the presidency as a dictatorship. Even though you even say in your comment that the party is segmented, you are treating the party as one monolith. I think you know each faction has their own special interests.

Hell, I’ll even tell you mine. I spend my times and resources focusing on climate change. It’s been my primary political motivation since the first Earth Day that I can remember, planting trees with my Mom and watching Captain Planet thereafter.

If I had it my way, I’d have the military spend at least 25% of their resources on that alone and require all citizens to complete 40 hours per year volunteering for environmental activities that impact their local community. I’d take back the word “sustainability” to mean impact to the climate.

If it were up to me that would be my main focus until we resolved the issue as I think it’s the biggest trial to humanity of our times. Those people are my faction.

I’d do that at the expense of many other initiatives; those others would likely die on the vine.

But I’m competing with so many other important activities supported by their own special interests. Now I wonder, which one gets prioritized? Likely the one by the faction that is screaming the most or the easy one that gets broad support and improves popular sentiment.

Now, if we were a dictatorship, we could get your and my issues resolved….but I don’t want to live in a dictatorship, so all I can do, living in our current moment, is cheer and vote and wait for my turn.

And I’ll do it with vigor, because the alternative is a big step in the wrong direction.
