It all depends on what you are trying to accomplish with this mode. If your goal is to do basic documents, web browsing, media consumption, or email/chat/etc, then the Motorola latest phones are more than capable. I’m pairing my phone with a portable display and a foldable keyboard/track pad combo (Bluetooth). It is perfectly capable of day to day light computing. I’ve even done some very light python programming using PyDroid.

My Motorola Edge+ 2023 has desktop mode when connected to an external display.

I’ve had solar installed on my roof for 3+ years. Best home upgrade I have made by far, IMHO. I agree that buying them or financing them is much better than leasing. Firstly, you take advantage of the tax rebate, also it’s much better when the time comes to sell the house.

I wouldn’t wait for the tech to advance though. You may lose out on the tax rebate if the current US admin deems that “woke”.

As for my experience with them, it’s been phenomenal. I basically pay $12/month between April and October. My annual electricity bill is down by about 95%.

Was super lucky that my wife was able to sell property in her home country after we got married and got her mom and her here to US. Also was one of the fortunate ones to have cash during the sub-prime recession so was able to get a super cheap mortgage.

I generally love owning the house although sometimes I miss renting, when something needs fixing. I’m pretty handy, so I do a lot of the jobs myself, but it could be a big chore.

Still, I’d rather have my own property and the freedom to do what I want with it, like installing solar panels, TV antenna, paint any color I like, etc.

My long term plan involves some sort of downsizing, possibly a live-aboard sail boat, although my wife is sceptical on that one. We’re probably going to end up getting a condo in one of the cheaper states.

I would first enquire if this idea can be patented. This could ensure your intellectual property remains with you. This should be your first step, I think. Also, are you able to prototype this yourself?

Growing up in USSR we had a saying: a comrad comes to you with a shovel, points to a patch of land and says: “you will dig from here and until supper”.

I bet White House, with it’s ties to Putin’s Russia, means something similar.

Nuclear is much more green than any fossil fuel based energy. It’s also much more stable than renewables because it does not rely on the sun, wind, tides, etc. Renewables need more development around grid-scale storage. This is where nuclear can be a good transitional stop to an all-renewable energy future.

There are drawbacks to nuclear, of course, storage of waste material is chief among them.

There is a DM system, but that’s not really what Lemmy is for. It’s basically a reddit alternative. So blogging in various communities. Find topical communities based on your interests, read what people are posting, comment or post your own.

All good points you are making here. One thing I would slightly disagree with is the fact that in Africa they are not offsetting emissions. A lot of the small African communities still consume energy. Mostly, it comes from running diesel or gas-powered generators, which are super inefficient and polluting.

Also, these projects can grow much larger and actually create a surplus of energy, which can then be sold to other parts of Africa and beyond, generating economic and environmental benefits.

Why can’t it be both? I have solar on my roof. I got it primarily to offset the cost of electricity, but it’s also good for the environment which was another consideration of mine.

The notion of an “agreement” with Putler is laughable! The only agreement he’s capable of not breaking is one he makes at the Hague to spare his life in exchange for peacefully dying in a cell somewhere.

Personally I use 24 hr time and YYYY-MM-DD date format almost exclusively, but here in the US you’ll get a bunch of people arguing and frothing at the mouth that MM-DD-YYYY is way superior because you say “March 16th 2025” instead of “2025 March 16th” and 24 hr clock is called “military time” because they are the ones using it. So, in short, it’ll take a lot of effort to change people’s habits.
