Well if you go with one of the open racks, just account for the cooling and don’t bunch everything together like in the post. Cramming things end to end without active cooling involved is just asking for them to take thermal damage. If each individual item you put in has directional cooling (ingress/egress), identify where they are, and make space. Just getting a cheap slot cooler to put at the top of bottom of one of the open racks would probably be fairly okay as long as there is airflow to each device.

They essentially want to try and give power to state and local governments to not adhere to US Census data in order to only count people they choose. This is contradictory of itself, because everyone inside the US is subject to it’s jurisdiction. If this argument is true, then non-citizens (even visitors) would not be subject to US laws writ large. You can’t pick and choose at your convenience. It’s a stupid argument.

If you’re talking about network attached storage, you won’t see much benefit from SSDs since the network transfer speeds are the bottleneck. Example: SSD transfer rate of 3000MB/s, but your wifi may only go 500MB/s, or Ethernet 1000MB/s.

You’re better off just going HDD on a NAS, at least for the $/Tb. Just start with two disks in RAID1. More than good enough for what you’re trying to do.

Certainly don’t need the Synology, just an option if you want things in a clean and tidy package with a UI to manage some things.
