my ex-mil is the tiniest meekest most submissive old fashion mexican woman that i’ve ever known; more so than my own grandmothers; but she recognized that her son was different (gay) when he was a toddler and she warned everyone that she knew that if they had a problem with her son, then they had a problem with her and to air their grievances now so she can know whom to cut out of her and her son’s life. (that’s a big deal for traditionalist mexicans like her family).
growing up, i winced a lot when i saw my aunts, uncles and cousins bully and beat the tar out of my cousin to “toughen the sissy out of him” and “beat the sugar out of his blood” because he was so flamboyantly gay. decades later; those same people fell upon extraordinarily hard times and my cousin took them all in. by doing so: he literally gave the same people who abused him so much that he had to ran away at 14 years old to protect himself from them and then turned around to give them a roof over their heads and food on the table for them when they asked.
i aspire to be both people; it think that they’re the best examples of humanity that i’ve seen with my own eyes.

yes and i’ve leveraged it along w the stereotype of the entitled american tourist (thanks to my very strong american accent) to get out of most of those episodes.
my anxiety about the future got a lot better once i started looking into how we got into this mess and the whole thing started by watching democracy now before watching pbs, or cbs, or abc, etc.
i barely integrate now as an american; mostly because of my neuro-divergence makes it easy for people to misread me due my intonation and body language and the number episodes of misunderstanding happened MUCH MORE frequently when i visited my potential new home country as a tourist over the last 40ish years.
i automatically qualify for citizenship for the country and i wonder what it’s going to be like if i have to live there because i have both legal and cultural claim to the country; but i’m very much american plus an american that always seems arrogant and callous to everyone no matter how much he tries.
watching my country’s original nature manifest itself so nakedly in examples like the election and this patch makes me wonder what else is going to come back into fashion and how much of it ever actually went away.
and knowing that at least half of my country’s voters would just “go with the flow” while the other half cheers on cheeto-mussolini tells me that i don’t want to know the answer to my question.
i think that cock.li’s experience is common for volunteer organizations in the american government’s cross hairs and i forsee an expansion of something like this onto open source projects & platforms like lemmy in the future given some of the public manifestations we’ve seen in the news like the american’s governments geopolitical posturing forcing the linux kernel project maintainers to expel russian contributors.
the american’s governments restriction on open source projects like the linux kernel is a portent of what’s to come and the entire FOSS world is going to be split into 2 because of it and with the better financed half being undeniably under the government’s control, but its contributors will continue to call it “free and open sourced software” nonetheless due to having the most leverage (for now).

my new job is going to be union and i hope that we engage with sympathy strikes in some way to help initiatives like this.
i know that sympathy strikes are illegal in the united states; but there are multiple ways to help.
the fediverse is designed to guard against the same kind of enshitification that reddit went into by keeping the same discourse alive everywhere regardless whether you use mastodon or lemmy or any other social media platform.
social media tribalism guarantees eventual enshitification of some kind, so keeping your options open makes sense should you ever decide to set sail on the fediverse sea after the people on your platform island have burned it all down due to the local culture war they insisted on fighting until its pointless end.
i’ve been switching from one social media platform to another since the 1990’s because of enshitification and that’s taught me that the platforms with investors behind it enshitify the in the worse ways possible (eg reddit, facebook, bluesky, etc.). so i think that the fediverse has the biggest and likeliest chance to survive all enshitification because of how it’s designed to keep the discourse alive no matter how many power tripping mods or majority conversation shaping admins there are. (at least for now).

i’ve started this series on youtube named "The Anti Imperialism of Star Trek Deep Space Nine" and i learned that, once you subscribe and like a leftist channel & video that the algorithms start bombarding you with leftist videos and youtubers.
i feel like a alaskan bear during a salmon run trying to catch all the salmon it can before they all die off in mass a few days they’ve mated as i try to identify which youtuber to subscribe to and which video to click like button on as the algorithms keep showing me multiple new ones every day. lol
also: i find that melding (word play intended) in the little bits of theory that i can get from youtube alongside a life long passion; like i did for myself with star trek; makes me more eager to finish it and makes it kinda fun.
