wow. that definitely adds some layers, considering Sam was the one who figured out how to fix the timeline and Teal’c was the one who executed it. and that he doesn’t tell the others anything that happened. poor guy :(

we here are bluesky are thrilled to accept Series A funding for Face-Eating Leopards, Inc. despite this we ensure that Leopards will not eat your face
the article is more about AAA games than consoles, and i agree with the article’s takeaway. graphical improvements have been an Emperor’s New Clothes situation for about a decade for me now. the reason we have those hundred hour AAA games is because with today’s technology, the only advantage big studios have over indies is sheer volume of content. people are starting to wise up to that more and more and those studios will have to find a different way to justify those massive budgets and price tags or simply go under
as for consoles, though? i think the average PC gamer underestimates the value of things Just Working to the vast majority of customers. PCs themselves are having a tough time against smartphones and chromebooks and computer literacy is decreasing from gen z to gen alpha as a result. the seeming failure of the newer xbox and playstation has more to do with the aforementioned dying AAA market and the fact that they’ve become dumbed-down gaming PCs themselves instead of Just Working. the Switch successor will probably not be great but still sell gangbusters because Nintendo is monopolizing the market on Just Works, even if just barely!
i’m really interested to see where this goes. i feel like a lot of the dorks (i say affectionately as a dork) who use the fediverse and people who do this kinda shortform video are two circles that don’t touch, so this could very well die on the vine- no pun intended- or it could give the fedi the jolt it needs to enter the mainstream
i totally get that, although being able to resub to all the same categories beats starting from scratch entirely somewhere else. my experience at fedia.io has been great so far
i’m not sure, i’m sorry. i just use the web interface as a PWA
kbin has a few extra bells and whistles, like it can also do mastodon-style “microblogging” and custom themes per user. it’s since ceased developement but mbin is a fork continuing it. other than that, the experience is the same
hell i went one step further and abandoned lemmy entirely for mbin
this might not be too far off, i know flarum is planning to include activitypub in their 2.0 release and nodebb already has it working in test
ah, interesting!
it always takes me right out of whatever i’m watching when a character says the same word twice and it’s translated into two different words. like when “matte! matte!” becomes “wait! stop!” it’s a stupid thing to care about and i’m sure translators have their reasons- very easy for me, an idiot who can barely speak one language, to criticize- but it always shatters my immersion
i think pops up in early computer rpgs like ultima a lot because the original Dungeons and Dragons was full of that kind of anachronistic stuff. TSR probably didn’t intentionally make it post-apocalypse though. they were just cramming whatever they thought was cool at the moment into their game, which is why you’re just as likely to find a downed spaceship as a dinosaur in Blackmoore. the post-apocalypse angle probably game to be when early crpgs wanted to ape that but wanted give it a proper story justification
i’ve also heard people say that the silmarillion has scifi elements, but i’m not sure how much of that is what tolkien intended versus what people read into it. i’ve also heard that the trope originates from medieval people coming across ruins of ancient roman architecture, but no examples were given- although it’s funny to think we have robots in The Legend of Zelda because aquaducts
not for political reasons so much as commerce reasons. you see, the universe was created by Big Universe to sell more universe
However, history shows that it didn’t work out, and when Sharp began making x86-based Windows machines — and, of course, they did — there was no migration path.
it’s very weird the way people talk about old platforms sometimes. the X68000 was a high-end product but still had a massive doujin scene and is still a valuable collector’s item today. but because they’re not still for sale, they’re a failure? is the NES a failure because you can’t buy one at Walmart anymore?
i just have such a hard time wrapling my head around why the fedi is under that level of scrutiny to begin with while everyone assumed cohost would be forever. i had an account there but stopped using it years ago because half the time i tried to log in it was down! come october there will be a plethora of mastodon instances that both predate and have outlived cohost
last week i was in a conversation with a few people about social media. i guess they were finally leaving xitter and wanted to know where to go. cohost came up and they all made accounts immediately. then i mentioned mastodon and was immediately rebuffed because “sometimes those instances shut down”
whoops!
libby is such a game changer. i totally get why a lot of people want to only read physical books but for me, being able to read anywhere at any time instead of having to make a concious decision to find and bring a book with you means i read way way more than i used to
yeah, the 2001 CD remaster was actually the one i grew up with! Julie is also my favorite bonus track. i don’t understand how it’s possible to make something that upbeat and melancholy at the same time but it just works
in theory voting through mail would be easier, but in practice it’s a nightmare. i needed absentee ballots for two elections when i was away for school- one arrived late and one didn’t arrive at all! much easier to just do in-person voting in my experience
