  • Some servers choose not to connect with each other.

Those servers have users and since they choose not to connect, there will be disparity.

Let’s say I’m on server ‘a’ and you are on server ‘b’ and this post is on server ‘c’

In this example, we can say that a and b connect with c, but a and b don’t connect with each other.

We would both independently see the post on server c, and we could both leave a comment. But since a and b don’t connect, we wouldn’t be able to see each other’s comments. The people on server c would be able to see both of our comments though.

This connection is called federation and it allows individual servers to control who they interact with.

Lemmy is just a piece of software, the people running the software on their servers control who they connect with. you could for example have multiple federations that comprise tons of servers that have no direct connection at all, resulting in two totally different networks.

  • Yes, honestly the fact that ‘youtube music’ is literally just a different frontend for YouTube drives me nuts, it goes both ways, the YouTube app for TV doesn’t have proper features either, it’s unclear if you are getting the music or video version and the most egregious of them all imo, on the TV app, you can’t freaking browse for a different song while music is playing, you have to stop the song to go to the search bar.

  • Yes, this is the critical flaw in this whole ordeal.

Comedians make tasteless jokes all the time and they generally get forgiven since they often exist as boundary pushers. A comedian makes 100 jokes that ride the line and push a little bit, and 1 of them was too far or bombs or whatever, no biggie, live and let live.

But going to this event, at this venue, with this crowd is not the same scenario. It sets a tone and he even mentions it in his set, that he doesn’t normally play to a room full of grandmas and babies or whatever.

  • Yes, general investing is not zero sum, however many methods of advanced trading are. Options trading, which is prominent and easy to access on Robinhood, is much closer to gambling (and is treated that way by many users) and is zero sum.

Most active trading strategies require successfully arbitraging, or extracting inefficiencies out of the market, and you can’t do either of those things without someone else losing money.

Passive investment is investing in the companies that underlay the market, active trading is extracting value out of the market itself.
