  • When we talk about Palestinian violence we (rightly) put it in context of the oppression they suffered. You can’t expect an oppressed people to react kindly and patiently to their oppressors. But this guy apparently does not deserve this circumspect approach. We know nothing about him other than he is claimed to be an Israeli soldier but he might have any number of mental illnesses, PTSD, what have you. But we’re perfectly happy to label him a monster, no questions asked.

I’m not trying to justify any violent behavior obviously, but we sure do love putting the excesses of “our” side in broader context, and highlighting perceived injustices of “theirs” without context.

  • Well it’s right to some extent. The left has been out of touch with lower class Americans for a long time. That said it doesn’t help when republicans, as a block, instinctively vote against every single policy the democrats propose, whether its good or bad.

That said, if you want a change from the out of touch pro-corporate democrats, why on earth would you vote for an unrepentant billionaire kleptocrat who blatantly promises to put all his billionaire friends in power?

Unironically I expect this to be the case. These “soldiers” in large part are young folks brainwashed by an extremist government and, to some extent, broader extremist society. There are going to be some of them who looking back later in life are going to be rightly horrified by their own actions. This is breeding a whole new generation of severely messed up people on both sides.

  • Killing the head of a terrorist organization won’t help if you don’t fix the underlying issues. He will be replaced in short order, usually by someone worse. Likewise this kind of political movement.

What the left in Europe (well in my country at least) still doesn’t understand is that they’re not going to fix this by lecturing the populist voters about how all their thoughts and ideas are wrong.

I’m on the side of social cooperation but this “argument” is pretty damn flimsy.

Scenario 1: I donate to some go-fund-me to pay for some kids medical treatment Scenario 2: I say “we should all be forced to pay for public healthcare for all”

I personally am very much in favor of the latter, but being happy about #1 and against #2 is not some kind of crazy cognitive dissonance.

  • All music is derivative. And if you think the best vocalists or musicians should be the most popular I may have some shocking news for you. The idea that American pop stars are authentic is pretty funny.

Yeah Korean pop idol culture has some extremely toxic elements to it, but so does American celebrity culture. I don’t get the feeling that’s what’s bothering you though.
