  • I don’t think there’s a big problem by using upvotes, downvotes and comments as systems that can show the popularity or controversy of a post.

Imo the bigger problem is in the comments using the same voting system. For starters, everyone the system in a different way. Most notably example is downvoting to disagree.

Secondly, because we are evolutionary wired to try and fit in, you either consciously or subconsciously try to create a comment that will give you the best chances at seeing the numbers go up and receive validation from your peers.

Personally I think the system is fine to keep running under the hood to keep the sorting algorithms available and maybe for moderation purposes, but it would be great if we wouldn’t be able to see them at all as to not be influenced by the connections we make between votes and post content.

  • This is amazing. We’ve gone from “count to 10 so you don’t get mad”, to “don’t count to 10, it’s only gonna make you focus on the problem and it gets worse”, back to “count to 10 (or just 5, apparently) and avoid an argument”.

For anyone who’s like “well duh people have been saying this for ages, my grandmother told me this”: this is data driven research that empirically (until proven wrong) proves that it does work.

My biggest problem with learning about these kind of studies is trying to let go of any “folk wisdom” people have been telling me for years, and actually remembering what is proven and what’s considered a myth.

  • I see you added two paragraphs so let me respond to those separately.

You’re making a lot of assumptions about my environment. I’m using an Android app, and I see no archive link options anywhere. Nor do I even browse my “home” instance, it was just an arbitrary choice to make an account there.

12ft.io doesn’t even work on most websites for me. I’ve tried, but it would always break the page or just give me an error.

Lastly, only OP can put an archive link in the body. So even if I archived something and shared the link, it’s still less accessible than OP including a link in the body.

  • Much appreciated. Now I have access to the quote:

“We have received feedback from customers that several reboots (as many as 15 have been reported) may be required, but overall feedback is that reboots are an effective troubleshooting step at this stage."

So fuck the headline, the real message is: yes, rebooting is an effective troubleshooting step at the moment.

I don’t know the exact timing of that message in the timeline of the incident, so it could be early “please restart and see if issue persists” or late “something was updated, rebooting will probably help”, I don’t know.
