  • Love love LOVE this post! I’d never heard of her, and that goes to show how women are ignored in history (especially non white western women). To have THREE imperial powers after you is huge, running a bank of 17 THOUSAND pirates is immense and she did that in a time when women were literally named as their husbands property. I’m wondering if the marrying her stepson was to protect each other, they both were legally stronger mutual guards as husband and wife.

Do you know was she really a sex worker? Or was that just said to discredit her and damage her name?

  • Poverty. It’s fucking shit. You live in constant fear, fear of not being able to eat, losing your home, and one breakage wiping you out for months or years. You live day to day or week to week, your life revolves around money and you might have to take shitty treatment from employers cos you don’t have options. The poor really do pay more. There’s a reason that it’s called the poverty trap and not the poverty easily escapable zone.

  • This is a really important issue. It’s rife on social media, and as a DA outreach worker, it’s something that concerns me. Anecdotally I find it a lot with my teenage clients, and they can find it hard to see they’re being abused because they see it as “we get in fights sometimes” “it’s equality”.

The fact is women tend to be less physically strong than men, and IME are often less experienced with fighting and/or manual skills. This means it’s often harder for us to fight a man. Importantly within DA the perp will have coercive control of their partner. That’s hard to fight against, so even if she hits him, he still has far more power.

I’ve noticed a lot of the people sharing the videos or making these comments are men with a history misogynistic behaviours. They’re often vocal about “female privilege” etc, and can just come across as pushing an agenda. I really think it’s just them pushing a narrative to excuse them being violent to women.

It’s a scary narrative that’s being pushed under the banner of Feminism. Feminism isn’t the right to be violent to women!
