Of all the things I did not expect, this is on up there. But it is pretty awesome.

Never went here but Ive been to the one in NYC which totally lived up to its legendary reputation, and the one in Houston that felt kinda like an Applebee’s. So which one is the Austin one like?

I am also. I wonder if they’re just licensing the name because the 2 couldn’t be more different.

They aren’t related at all. Katz’s Deli in Austin was opened decades ago by Marc Katz, who was a New Yorker, perennial candidate for Austin mayor, and overall sleazeball who was also on TV a lot. He expanded to a second location in Houston in like 2000, and his son, who seems saner, took that one over. Marc Katz declared bankruptcy and closed the Austin location awhile back, but his son’s business has been doing great.

This Katz’s is perfectly fine. No, of course it’s not the world famous Katz’s Deli in NY, but it’s way better than shitty chain restaurants like Applebee’s in literally every way. Their sandwiches are fine. The fried pickles and shakes are great. They’re open at 3am when you need them to be.

No, his son is. The Katz’s property was bought by Nate Paul/World Class Holdings in 2011 after the Austin location closed, and well we all know what’s happening with Nate Paul, and his son Barry Katz was able to buy the building back in a foreclosure auction.

It had Momo’s upstairs, a badass blues club. I hope they bring back an iteration of that too

The only people I knew who went to Austin’s Katz’s were out drinking and most recommended the pickle, or sometime that.

I wonder if this will try to be 24 hours.

Back then, there were very few options for food downtown at night.

Now, the food or atmosphere will have to be really good to keep people going back after the initial nostalgic visit.

Haha yeah that’s why I went. I always felt bad for people who were working during those hours, for so many reasons.
