I can see how vaccine + 30% die would jump out, but smallpox itself had a 30% mortality rate which is what I’d assume this is referring to.

I’m not sure how you got that impression - the eradication of smallpox may very well be one of the greatest successes of modern medicine. It’s a story about hope, and what we can achieve if we work together.
